Veoh Blocking Mauritus

THis is an odd thing... Veoh, the high quality streaming video site has banned several countries. well the following ones:

Algeria, Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Bahrain, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guam, Guatemala, Guyana, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Morocco, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Serbia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, Venezuela, Vietnam, Virgin Island...

the reason advanced by Veoh is that those country represent a too small concentration of users, around 10%. -scratchs head- doesn't quite make sense..

hmm, what do those countries have in common..?

Advertisement revenue wise, they don't pay much? seems that way.

they have lower than average connection speed? very true for Mauritius.

Jumping a few guns. I must say its understandable.

I mean if you have a crappy connection you are likely to say connected to their site for a VERY long time meaning a lot of resource mobilized for a VERY long time. And for high quality streaming video site, that means a LOT of money spent on a low paying customer.

Veoh is an expensive service to run in terms of bandwidth/storage. 10% of their market probably means 10% of their revenue. all those country probably equal more than 10% of their visitors. But they just don't pay as well as US/EU viewers.

Still, that's one more thing we can blame on the ISP.

but the term "blocked" is a rather strong one. I mean it's like they are banning us outright based on geographic location. Rather rude.

then again I almost never use Veoh.

It's probably because of our crappy connections that require an eternity to load an HQ video. For them, this means one connection (or more) blocked on their servers for very long, whereas another user could have made better use of this time.

It's a fact: Mauritius has crappy, outdated and extremely slow connections. And there seems to be absolutely no move to bring us something better.

Come'on! 2Mbps at Rs.10,000 per month is not bad! You can get 10Mbps in Europe for a huge Rs.1200 per month! :P

Btw... is it me, or are there loads of African countries in the blacklist?

yes, mostly the third world and poorer European, eastern countries.

that's globalisation for you.
